By the late 1990s, the Gold Canadian Maple Leaf Series saw its fortunes improve as demand for precious metals increased. Concerns over the impact of the Y2K changeover in computer software were rattling markets and nerves around the globe. Combined with a slowing global economy, this era pushed more investors toward gold bullion. Now, 1997 1 oz Gold Canadian Maple Leafs are available to you for purchase online from Silver.com.

Coin Highlights:

  • Coins ship to you in individual protective flips!
  • 19th release in the 1 oz Gold Canadian Maple Leafs Series!
  • Announced mintage of 478,211 coins!
  • Consists of One Troy ounce of .9999 fine gold.
  • Issued a face value of $50 (CAD) by Canada.
  • The obverse features Queen Elizabeth II.
  • On the reverse is the sugar maple leaf.

In 1979, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced the Gold Maple Leaf as a vehicle for private gold ownership. The coins were introduced 12 years after the Gold Krugerrand from South Africa and debuted at a time when pressure was mounting on South Africa to reverse its apartheid policies. The failure of South Africa to do so led to economic sanctions from Western nations.

The result was strong demand for the new Gold Canadian Maple Leaf Coins, with mintages throughout the 1980s holding between 800,000 and 1.1 million coins annually. The 1990s was a much different story. Following a strong release in 1990, mintage from 1991 to 1996 fell to much lower levels, with two dates in this range falling below 200,000 in mintage. The 1997 release marked the first upturn in demand during the decade.

The obverse of 1997 Gold Canadian Maple Leafs features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief in the third-generation portrait to feature on Canadian coins. Designed in 1990 by Dora de Pedery-Hunt, this visual shows Elizabeth II with the George IV State Diadem Crown and is the first ever created by a Canadian artist.

On the reverse side of the 1997 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf, you will find the sugar maple leaf. This design has featured on the coins since 1979 and was created by Walter Ott. The coins in this series have all used this design, from the gold and silver coins to the platinum and palladium coins.

These 1997 1 oz Gold Canadian Maple Leafs are available to you in protective flips. The mintage of more than 400,000 coins in 1997 was the highest since 1990 and marked the start of a three-year upturn in demand for the coins.

Where does your spot price come from?

We use a live, up-to-the-second spot price feed supplied by Xignite.com, a worldwide leader in the data supply market.

Are your products actually in stock?

Yes. We are one of the few bullion dealers in the industry who only deems products "in stock" when we have them on-hand and ready to ship immediately. In the instance of a presale item, we denote that the product is on presale and the estimated shipping date. While we make the best efforts to hit presale dates, the dates are only estimates, given we cannot control mint production issues and/or carrier dealyes.

Why are multiple prices listed?

We offer a 4% discount to "cash" paying customers - with paper check, bank wire, and bitcoin payments being defined as cash. On many products, we are also able to offer volume discounts to customers purchasing large quantities of the same item. All volume pricing is laid out in the chart on the product's description page, as well as in the cart.

When do I lock in my price?

All prices are locked in at the time of purchase. Credit/debit card, PayPal, BitCoin, Ethereum, and Ripple orders are paid at the time of checkout, while paper check and bank wire orders require a credit/debit card on file to lock in your pricing while we await your payment. Please note, paper check and bank wire orders will NOT result in a charge to your card - we simple maintain the card on file while we await full payment by your selected payment method.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to addresses in the United States, including APOs.
