Pre-1933 US gold coins are among the most difficult for investors and collectors to find. In the midst of the Great Depression, the federal government collected all coins in circulation and melted them down into gold bars. Any coins surviving today experience extremely high demand. Right now, the $20 Gold Liberty Double Eagle coin is available for purchase from Silver.com.

The $20 Gold Liberty Double Eagle coin was the first product from the United States Mint directly influenced by the discovery of gold in California. The California Gold Rush of 1848 left the Treasury department with an excess of gold, and prompted Congress to authorize the production of newly designed gold coins.
Each of the $20 Gold Liberty Double Eagle coins in this listing was struck between 1850 and 1907, featuring a design set created by artist James B. Longacre. These specific coins are available in Extremely Fine condition. A coin in XF condition has very light wear visible only on the highest points of the design features.
The obverse side of each coin shows Lady Liberty in a left-profile portrait, and wearing a crown with the word “Liberty” engraved in it. There are 13 stars around her head, representing the original American colonies. Below her head is the engraving of the year of minting.
On the reverse side of each $20 Gold Liberty Double Eagle is an elaborate depiction of the heraldic eagle. In the center, a bald eagle is featured behind the heraldic shield. The bird clutches arrows and an olive branch in its talons, and has a banner around it reading “E Pluribus Unum.” The phrase “In God We Trust” is engraved directly above its head, while “United States of America” and “Twenty Dollars” is inscribed around the outer edge.
These coins were struck by the United States Mint at its facilities in Philadelphia, Carson City, Denver, New Orleans, and San Francisco.
