It wasn’t until the 21st century that the Royal Canadian Mint began to release the Silver Maple Leaf in various commemorative editions. One year after the issue of these 2002 1 oz Silver Canadian Maple Leaf Coins, the Royal Canadian Mint issued a 15th anniversary edition of the Silver Maple Leaf. Prior to 2000, only five Silver Maple Leaf coins had special privy marks.

In the years after 2000, the Royal Canadian Mint released 25 different privy marks on Silver Maple Leaf coins through 2017. The growing popularity of the Silver Canadian Maple Leaf made it the perfect vehicle for commemorative privy-mark coins with a trusted design on the reverse.

For the 2002 1 oz Silver Canadian Maple Leaf, mintage had increased from 398,000 the year before to 576,196 coins. This was the first of 10 years to come in which the mintage of the Silver Canadian Maple Leaf climbed upward. Silver prices in 2002 climbed from 2001, which silver averaged $4.20 per ounce. Silver averaged $4.60 per ounce throughout 2002, only reaching as high as $5.10 per ounce during the year.

The reverse of all Silver Canadian Maple Leaf coins feature the sugar maple leaf design. Introduced in 1979 on the Gold Maple Leaf coin, the design comes from Walter Ott of the Royal Canadian Mint and continues in use on all versions of the coin from gold and silver to platinum and palladium.

On the obverse of the 2002 1 oz Silver Canadian Maple Leaf Coin is Queen Elizabeth II’s effigy. This is the last year of issue, for most Canadian coins, in which the Dora de Pedery-Hunt effigy created in 1990 appears on the Silver Canadian Maple Leaf. It would soon be replaced by an upcoming fourth-generation portrait.
