Issued in both bullion and proof versions, the Gold American Buffalo coins are the US Mint’s first 24-karat fine gold offering. These beautiful Proof Gold Buffalo coins are fitted into a protective capsule and placed into a mint-issued box that can easily be used to display your treasure. Each coin comes with a Certificate of Authenticity. Coveted by both collectors and investors, these 24-karat gold coins are struck at the West Point Mint, with a W mint mark. Right now, Silver.com has this first issue 2006-W 1 oz Proof Gold American Buffalo coin ready for purchase.

  • Contains One Troy ounce of .9999 fine gold.
  • Bears a face value of $50 (USD) that is fully backed by the federal government.
  • An indigenous Tribal Leader is featured on the obverse.
  • An American Buffalo is featured on the reverse.
  • Total of 246,267 coins were minted in 2006.
  • Includes a W mint mark from the West Point Mint.

The 2006-W Proof Gold American Buffalo coin obverse was designed by James Earle Fraser and first appeared in 1913 on the Indian Head nickel. Per Fraser, this indigenous Tribal Leader profile is a composite of sketches he did of 3 chiefs from different American Indian tribes. The chiefs that Fraser sketched are believed to be Chief Two Moons of the Cheyenne, Chief Big Tree of the Kiowa, and Chief Iron Tail of the Oglala Lakota.

The 2006-W Proof Gold American Buffalo coin reverse features the left-facing profile of the majestic American Buffalo, resting on a dirt mound. This design was also created by James Earle Fraser. It is believed that the inspiration for this buffalo is the largest American buffalo ever held in captivity at the time, Black Diamond, from the Central Park Zoo.

Title II of Public Law 109-145, also known as the Presidential $1 Coin Act of 2005, created the Gold American Buffalo Coin series. It called for the striking and issuance of both bullion and proof coins, weighing 1 ounce, with a $50 face value, and containing .9999 fine gold. It also stipulated that the obverse and reverse designs were to be James Earle Fraser’s Indian Head nickel designs, at least for the first year of the Gold Buffalo coins.

The Gold American Buffalo coin is the first time that the US Mint has produced a .9999 fine 24-karat gold coin. This was done, in part, to allow the US to keep pace with other countries that already had 24-karat gold coin offerings, such as the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf and the Chinese Gold Panda. It is known that many investors prefer the .9999 fine gold coins.

We use a live, up-to-the-second spot price feed supplied by Xignite.com, a worldwide leader in the data supply market.

Are your products actually in stock?

Yes. We are one of the few bullion dealers in the industry who only deems products "in stock" when we have them on-hand and ready to ship immediately. In the instance of a presale item, we denote that the product is on presale and the estimated shipping date. While we make the best efforts to hit presale dates, the dates are only estimates, given we cannot control mint production issues and/or carrier dealyes.

Why are multiple prices listed?

We offer a 4% discount to "cash" paying customers - with paper check, bank wire, and bitcoin payments being defined as cash. On many products, we are also able to offer volume discounts to customers purchasing large quantities of the same item. All volume pricing is laid out in the chart on the product's description page, as well as in the cart.

When do I lock in my price?

All prices are locked in at the time of purchase. Credit/debit card, PayPal, BitCoin, Ethereum, and Ripple orders are paid at the time of checkout, while paper check and bank wire orders require a credit/debit card on file to lock in your pricing while we await your payment. Please note, paper check and bank wire orders will NOT result in a charge to your card - we simple maintain the card on file while we await full payment by your selected payment method.

Do you ship internationally?

We currently only ship to addresses in the United States, including APOs.
