The American Eagle Coin program launched back in 1986 from the United States Mint. The original release featured gold and silver bullion coin options. The mint has since expanded the program to include both proof and bullion versions of coins in four different metal types: gold, silver, platinum, and palladium. The gold coins also come in a variety of sizes, including fractional weights. These fractional weights are great for shoppers on a budget. Each metal types features a different design on both the obverse and reverse faces of the coin.
Today, you can get your piece of American nostalgia with the 2013 1/4 oz Gold American Eagle Coin. As one of the most sought-after coins in the world, you will be investing in a great gold bullion product. Each coin contains 22-karat gold with small amounts of alloy that allow the coins to be more scratch-resistant.
The obverse face showcases Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ brilliant depiction of Lady Liberty as she walks away from the Capitol building. At her back, you can see the sunshine. In her left hand, she holds an olive branch. In her right hand, she carries a lit torch. Inscriptions on this face of the coin include “Liberty” and the year of mint “2013.” This image was first used back in 1907 on the $20 Gold Double Eagle coins that ran through 1933.
The reverse side of each coin bears the image of a male bald eagle coming into land at his nest. The male is carrying an olive branch in his talons, while his mate and hatchlings rest inside the next. The image was created in 1986 by sculptor Miley Busiek for use on these coins.
