Australia has one of the world’s most diverse ecosystems contained within one nation. That diversity allows for a wide variety of exciting animal life to exist and thrive in nature. The Perth Mint often celebrates the diversity of Australia’s wildlife on commemorative coins, and the 2014 1 oz Silver Australian Thylacoleo Proof coin is just another example of the excellent design and production capabilities of the facility.
The Thylacoleo is an extinct creature that once roamed Australia’s famous Outback region. The mammal was similar to a kangaroo, but was a carnivore rather than a herbivore. The Perth Mint set this coin apart from so many other commemorative proofs by adding color to the background on the reverse side of the coin. Rather than using an all-silver finish, the designers at the Perth Mint added natural hues to the imagery of the Outback used in the background of the 2014 1 oz Silver Australian Thylacoleo Proof coin.
On the reverse of the 2014 1 oz Silver Australian Thylacoleo Proof is the image of a female Thylacoleo climbing along a tree branch. The adult female carries her young offspring on her back. The natural beauty of the Outback can be seen behind the animal in the image. Engravings on this side of the coin include the weight, purity, and metal content below, and the creature’s name, “Thylacoleo,” above.
The obverse of the coin bears the traditional Australian image of Queen Elizabeth II, as designed by Ian Rank-Broadley. In the image, the Queen is featured in a right-profile portrait. Her Majesty’s likeness is surrounded by the engravings “Elizabeth II,” “Australia 2014,” and the face value of the proof.
The Perth Mint is located in Western Australia and is the official mint for the government of Australia. The facility was first established in 1899 by the Royal Mint of London when Australia was a part of the British Empire. New mint facilities were required at the time to process and refine gold and other precious metals discovered on the continent. Today, the Perth Mint is the only remaining facility in a system that once included mints in Sydney and Melbourne.
