The 2014 issue of the Gold Kennedy Half Dollar marked the 50^th anniversary of the release of the circulation US half dollar with the bust of President John F. Kennedy. Following his assassination in November 1963, Congress moved quickly to redesign one of the nation’s circulating coins. With President Lincoln already on the penny, President Roosevelt on the dime, and President Washington on the quarter, the half dollar was the best bet. The United States Mint issued the first Kennedy Half Dollar in 1964. The coin was designed using images previously created for the President John F. Kennedy appreciation medal series in 1962, with the designs modified slightly for use on the half dollar. The images were modified, prepared for coining, and struck between November 1963 when President Kennedy was assassinated and March 1964 when the first coins were released to the public.

Kennedy Half Dollar coins were the last of the circulation US silver coins to release. In fact, 1964 as the last year the dime, quarter, and half dollar were issued with 90% silver content and 10% copper. After 1964, the dime and quarter were issued with the new cupro-nickel alloy, while Kennedy Half Dollars actually continued from 1965 to 1970 using 40% silver content.

On the obverse side of 2014-W Gold 50^th Anniversary Kennedy Half Dollars is a depiction of a President John F. Kennedy from Gilroy Roberts. The bust captures a smiling President Kennedy in left-profile relief.

The reverse face of the 2014-W Gold Kennedy Half Dollars bears the modified presidential seal. Based on the heraldic eagle, it shows the American bald eagle with the US national shield, olive branch of peace, and arrows of war. A ring of 50 stars encircles the eagle emblem.
