Silver Australian Kookaburra coins were unveiled for the first time in 1990, this bullion coin with fresh design features on the reverse each year helped launch a number of other popular programs from the Perth Mint. Due to its high demand, the mint embarked on other programs that include the Lunar Series (1996-2007), Silver Australian Koala (2007-present), Lunar Series II (2008-2019), and the Silver Australian Kangaroo (2016).
Each year the Perth Mint debuts a new design on the reverse side of the Silver Australian Kookaburra, increasing the value of and demand for this popular coin series. While the program typically consists of a 1 Kilo, 10 oz, 2 oz, and 1 oz coin, this year there will be no 2 oz variety offered.
Each of the 2016 1 Kilo Silver Australian Kookaburra coins in this Silver.com product listing is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Coins with a BU grade show no signs of wear and tear, but may have breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks from the coining process.
On the reverse side is the latest image of the kookaburra. This year’s design features a lone kookaburra sitting perched atop a fence post, with barb wire visible around the base of the post. Engravings on this side include “Australian Kookaburra,” and the coin’s year of issue, weight, purity, and silver.
The obverse bears Ian Rank-Broadley’s right-profile image of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty’s effigy is surrounded by engravings that read “Elizabeth II,” “Australia,” and “30 Dollars.”
