Only the South African Krugerrand and Gold Canadian Maple Leaf coins have been available to investors longer than the Gold Chinese Panda. 2016 marks a year of change for these popular coins, with weights now marked in grams. The obverse of the 2016 8 Gram Gold Chinese Panda Coin features the latest image of a panda to grace the coin series. In this depiction, a single panda is visible clinging to a fallen tree trunk as it looks down at a small body of water. Engravings include the face value, weight, metal content, and purity of the coin.
On the reverse you’ll find the outer façade of the Temple of Heaven. This same image has featured on the coins in the series since its introduction in 1982. It is accompanied by a Mandarin engraving above that reads “People’s Republic of China,” and an engraving below that features the year of issue.
Starting with 2016 Gold Chinese Pandas, the Chinese Mint has introduced a switch to grams for the weights of its coins. The government states that the switch was made to bring the nation’s official bullion coin series in line with the country’s use of the metric system.
