This all-new product from the Royal Canadian Mint features a rare specimen finish. Similar to a proof finish in appearance, the exact definition of a specimen coin varies from one mint to the next. In most cases, a specimen coin features many of the design facets of a proof with heightened beauty.
Donna Kriekle’s Maple Leaves design on this coin is referred to as “generational,” and reflects the full growth cycle of a sugar maple leaf. In the lower left of the design you’ll find the young seeds, known as a samara (winged maple key) which depicts the seedlings of a maple tree. The design evolves up the branch to feature the deeply-veined appearance of a mature leaf as well as the broad design of an elder maple leaf in autumn.
The reverse side of the 2016 Silver Canadian $10 Maple Leaves coin features Kriekle’s generational maple leaf design, as well as engravings that identify the coin’s nation of issue, face value, and year of issue.
On the obverse is Susanna Blunt’s 2003 right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Featured along with Her Majesty’s effigy are the engravings “Elizabeth II” and “D.G. Regina.”
The Royal Canadian Mint is a highly-regarded facility with an international reputation for impressive design and a minimum fineness of .9999 in all of its silver and gold products. It operates two modern facilities in Ottawa and Winnipeg.
