Since 1998, the United States Mint has used new reverse designs on the Proof Platinum American Eagle coin series. The first of these was the Vistas of Liberty from 1998 to 2002, and subsequent series include the Foundations of Democracy designs (2006 to 2008) and the Preamble of the US Constitution theme (2009 to 2014).

As of 2015, the US Mint has used the Torches of Liberty designs from United States Mint Artistic Infusion Program designer Paul C. Balan and US Mint Engraver-Sculptor Joseph Menna. The 2016 1 oz Proof Platinum American Eagle coin features the Torch of Enlightenment design, the second and final design.

The 2016-W 1 oz Proof Platinum American Eagles here are available in near-perfect condition according to the NGC. Coins with a PF69 grade exhibit full, original mint luster and bear a maximum of two minor detracting flaws, such as miniscule contact marks located outside the primary focal areas of the coin.

As an Early Release coin, these products arrived at the NGC for certification within the first 30 days of the release date for 2016 Platinum Eagles. Ultra-cameo coins have contrasting strong, frosted finishes on the design set and deeply-mirrored, clear background fields.

On the obverse of the 2016-W 1 oz Proof Platinum American Eagle coin you’ll find the Portraits of Liberty design created in 1997 by then-US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti, and has featured on the obverse side every year.

The reverse features the Torches of Enlightenment design, which depicts Liberty holding a torch in her right hand and a massive olive branch in her left as an American bald eagle flies through the background field of the coin.
