Today, the first-ever 2017 1 oz Silver South African Krugerrand Coin is available to you online at Silver.com in perfect condition.

Krugerrand coins were developed in 1967 as a means of promoting gold bullion for personal investment, and to promote the gold reserves of South Africa on the global stage. For more than a decade the Krugerrand was the only coin of its kind available, and became a dominant figure in the precious metals industry.

While other coins have come along, none is as revered as the Gold Krugerrand. To celebrate 50 years of success, the South African Mint is expanding the series for the first time ever. In addition to the usual Gold Krugerrands, the 2017 release includes these Silver Krugerrands, a Platinum Krugerrand, and an original recreation of the 1967 issue.

All 2017 1 oz Silver South African Krugerrand Coins in this product listing have been certified SP70 coins by the PCGS. Coins in this condition are considered perfect specimens, and feature full, original mint luster with no detracting flaws of any kind on the surface areas. All Silver Krugerrands from the South African Mint are struck on special silver blanks that have been treated with the utmost care throughout the coining process.

On the reverse of all Silver South African Krugerrand coins is the image of a Springbok antelope. Both sides of the coin have engravings in both English and the native Afrikaans spoken by tribes and ethnic groups in South Africa. The designs on the modern obverse and reverse were refined in 1984, with Otto Schultz revitalizing Kruger’s portrait and Coert Steynberg reimagining the Springbok antelope.

The obverse of the Silver Krugerrand features the left-profile portrait of Paul Kruger. Known as Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger, he was the most dominant political and military figure of 19th-century South Africa. He led the Boer cause for a free and independent South African republic.
