The Burnished Silver American Eagle coin debuted in 2006 as part of the 20th anniversary celebration of the Silver Eagle collection. It was available consistently in its first three years, but the Great Recession put a halt to collectible silver coining from the US Mint as it focused on the intense demand for silver bullion.
Burnished Silver Eagles were not coined in 2009 or 2010, and since returning in 2011 have had much lower mintage figures than prior to the recession. The highest mintage came in 2007 at 621,333, while the 2015 release had the lowest in program history at 223,879 coins.
The obverse of all Silver American Eagle coins features the iconic image of Walking Liberty created for the US Mint’s half-dollar circulation coin in 1916 by Adolph A. Weinman. Liberty’s figure is featured walking from right to left on the coin’s obverse, with her right hand outstretched, her left hand holding an olive branch and laurel, and an American flag over her shoulders.
On the reverse of the 2017-W 1 oz Burnished Silver American Eagle coin you’ll find the heraldic eagle design. First used on the initial coins struck by the Philadelphia Mint for a fledgling nation in 1794, it has been refined constantly over two centuries with this depiction modernized by John Mercanti, former Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.
Your 2017-W 1 oz Burnished Silver American Eagle Coin is in Mint State 69 condition. Considered a near-perfect specimen by the NGC, these coins have full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. The Early Release label is included in the slab, indicating these coins were received by the NGC for grading within 30 days of their initial release by the US Mint.
