The Black Bull of Clarence is the fifth design issue in the Queen’s Beast Series. It follows the release of (in order) the Lion of England, Griffin of Edward III, Red Dragon of Wales, and the Unicorn of Scotland. Each of the beasts represented in this series comes from centuries of British heraldry and was chosen by a different monarch throughout history.
On the reverse of the 2018 ¼ oz Gold British Queen’s Beast Black Bull Coin is the image of the Black Bull of Clarence. This is the first design appearance from the House of York in British monarchy. Edward IV rose to become the King of England following the War of the Roses, and was the first member from the House of York to sit on the throne.
The Black Bull of Clarence design was used many times by Edward IV, but also by his brother Richard III (the last York king). It integrated a Royal Arms shield used by Edward III that was reflective of dual claims to the British and French thrones by many British monarchs of the day.
Gold Queen’s Beast Black Bull Coins feature the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. All British coinage includes this new fifth-generation design created by Jody Clark in 2015. This is the latest in a line of portraits of Her Majesty used on British coins since her rise to the throne in 1952.
