The Royal Canadian Mint introduced its now-popular Silver Canadian Maple Leaf in 1988 as the first expansion upon the broader Maple Leaf Series. The program started in 1979 with the debut of the Gold Maple Leaf. When the Silver Maple Leaf debuted in 1988, it became the first silver bullion coin in the world with .9999 fine silver content.
All 2018 1 oz 30th Anniversary Silver Canadian Maple Leaf Coins listed here today are in BU condition. Coins in BU condition show no signs of wear and tear, but the specimens are not without minor flaws from the production process. These flaws include possible breaks in the luster, spotted surfaces, or contact marks. All 2018-dated Silver Maple Leaf bullion coins feature the mint’s new MINTSHIELD Technology. Developed over a four-year period, this breakthrough application is invisible to the eye and helps combat the occurrence of “white spots” on silver bullion coins during production, packaging, and storage of the silver coins.
The reverse side of the 30th Anniversary Silver Maple Leaf features added elements that denote the anniversary date. Within the design of the sugar maple leaf, which was originally created in 1979 by Walter Ott, the RCM has added a “30.” The “3” is featured on the left portion of the leaf while the “0” is on the right. Both digits appear to hang from the leaf itself and are a bold announcement of the program’s three decades of relevance with investors.
On the reverse of the 2018 1 oz 30th Anniversary Silver Maple Leaf you’ll find the familiar sugar maple leaf design to go along with the above mentioned 30th anniversary text. The nation of issue, purity, weight, and metal content of the coin are also included.
The obverse of all Silver Canadian Maple Leaf coins features the image of Queen Elizabeth II. Captured in right-profile relief, the Queen has appeared on Canadian coinage since her coronation in 1953. This particular design represents the fourth-generation effigy of the Queen of England, and was created in 2003 by Canadian artist Susanna Blunt.
