The Bird of Paradise is better known to many Australians as Victoria’s riflebird. Scottish naturalist John Macgillivray spotted the species in what is now Queensland in 1848 and named it after the UK’s reigning monarch, Queen Victoria I. The colorful plumage of the males in the species reminded him of the uniforms of the British Royal Army’s Queen’s Riflemen Brigades.
All of the 2018 1 oz Gold Australian Bird of Paradise Coins available to you here today are in near-perfect condition according to the NGC. Coins with a Mint State 69 grade feature full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Limited in scope to the areas outside the primary focal points, these flaws range from minuscule contact marks to hairlines visible only under magnification.
The reverse of the 2018 Gold Australian Bird of Paradise Coins features the image of a duwuduwu, as the local Yidinji people of eastern Australia refer to it, as it is taking off from a broken branch. The bird spreads its wings wide and is accompanied by engravings of “Australian Bird of Paradise,” “P,” and “1 oz 9999 Gold.”
On the obverse of the 2018 1 oz Gold Australian Bird of Paradise coin is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is depicted here in right-profile relief in a design that is the fourth-generation portrait of the Queen since her ascension to the throne in 1952. Her Majesty’s effigy is accompanied by engravings of “Elizabeth II,” “Australia 2018,” and “100 Dollars.”
