The initial release of the new EC8 collection from the Scottsdale Mint represents the two-island nation of Antiqua & Barbuda and features images of the rum-running industry that boomed in the Caribbean in the 17th and 18th century. Rum was the lifeblood of early Caribbean planters who competed for sales to other islands in the West Indies and throughout colonies in North America. The Royal Navy was often looked to by these nations for protection for rum shipments as pirates would attempt to confiscate the rum and sneak it into the ports of heavily-taxed colonies.
The reverse of the 2018 1 oz Silver Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner coin features the design of a large frigate anchored just offshore as it awaits a load of rum. The barrels of rum and a half-empty bottle are easily spotted on the shore in the foreground.
On the obverse of the Silver Antigua & Barbuda Rum Runner Coin is the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II surrounded by a half circle of a wreath. Engravings of the coin’s issuing bank, face value, weight, purity, and metal content accompany the Queen’s portrait and her name.
