The 2018 release of the Silver Australian Kookaburra is the first in the history of the Silver Kookaburra to feature .9999 fine silver content, a boost from the original .999 silver content used for the coins from 1990 to 2017. The 2018 release was also the last to feature the portrait of the Queen from Ian Rank-Broadley.
The obverse side of 2018 Silver Australian Kookaburra Dog Privy Coins features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief in a design from Ian Rank-Broadley that was originally created in 1998 for the Royal Mint of England. The design debuted a year later on coins from the Perth Mint and Royal Mint of Australia. In this design, Her Majesty is shown wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara.
On the reverse face of 2018 1 oz Silver Kookaburra Dog Privy Coins is a depiction of a kookaburra in flight. Synonymous with the Australian Outback, the kookaburra is the largest member of the kingfisher species. The design field includes a small, circular privy mark with a Year of the Dog design.
Perth Mint was founded in 1899 as the third and final branch mint in the Royal Mint system. Starting in 1902, the mint transitioned its role as Australia underwent its federation process. Since the 1970s, the mint has been controlled by the state government of Western Australia.
