The Royal Canadian Mint has rolled out a variety of counterfeiting security measures on its Canadian Maple Leaf coins in recent years. The first of these inclusions was the use of radial lines in the background field of all Maple Leaf coins. These light-diffracting lines make it more difficult to counterfeit the coins. In addition to security features, the Royal Canadian Mint is also doing more to combat production flaws. So-called “white spots” are a common problem on silver bullion coins, and the new MINTSHIELD Technology from RCM provides an invisible barrier on the coin’s surface to combat the occurrence of these milky spots. The barrier does not impact the coin’s composition or purity.
Further, the RCM uses a micro-laser engraved Maple Leaf privy mark on its 1 oz gold and 1 oz silver coins in the collection. Within this privy mark you’ll find the year of issue for each particular coin, in this case “18.” Now, with the introduction of Bullion DNA the coins are more secure. All privy marks are encoded, scanned, and stored at the RCM for authentication on individual coins.
On the reverse of the Silver Canadian Maple Leaf coins is the image of the sugar maple leaf. The maple leaf has symbolized the nation of Canada since before it earned nationhood, with early settlers using it as far back as the mid-18th century. When the Confederation movement occurred in 1867, the sugar maple leaf was on the path to becoming the national emblem, and is now featured prominently on the national flag.
The obverse of all 2018 1 oz Silver Canadian Maple Leaf coins features a right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is captured in this design by Susanna Blunt, a Canadian artist who developed the image in 2003 for Canadian coinage. This is the fourth-generation portrait overall in use on Canadian coins and the first to depict Her Majesty without a crown.
