The leopard shark is a member of the hound shark species, from the family Triakidae. Unlike some of its larger cousins, the leopard shark is a slender-bodied shark that only grows to a maximum average of 4.9 ft long. The sharks tend to swim together in groups, flowing with the tide onto intertidal mudflats in search of clams, crabs, shrimp, fish, and fish eggs as a meal.
Each 2018 1 oz Silver Tokelau Leopard Shark Coin represents the fifth release in the 12-coin series from Highland Mint representing the New Zealand tropical territory of Tokelau. Previous releases in this series feature designs of, in order of release, the Tuna, Sailfish, Great White Shark, and Barracuda.
On the obverse of all Silver Tokelau coins in this series you’ll find two images. First is the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Created in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, it is the fourth-generation depiction of the Queen. The other image is the Tuluma, a native wooden tackle box used by fishermen on Tokelau.
The reverse side of the 2018 1 oz Silver Tokelau Leopard Shark Coin is the image of the shark. It is depicted swimming through its favored habitat, kelp beds. As the name suggests, leopard sharks have black markings across their body that resemble the striping of a leopard or other predatory cat.
