Cumberland Island National Seashore is located at the very southeastern tip of Georgia’s Atlantic coastline along the border with the state of Florida. The National Seashore here was established by Congress in 1972 to preserve Cumberland Island in Camden County, Georgia, which is one of the largest of the Golden Isles in the state.
On the reverse side of the 2018 5 oz Silver ATB Cumberland Island National Seashore Coin is the image of a snowy egret standing in the salt marshes of Cumberland Island. The snowy egret’s beautiful plumes were once the target of hunters who sold them to designers decorating women’s hats, but the species is now protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act in the United States.
Cumberland Island National Seashore includes vast stretches of beaches, dunes, saltwater marshes, and freshwater lakes. The seashore also preserves a variety of historic sites and structures on the island.
The obverse of all Silver ATB Cumberland Island National Seashore Coins features the bust of President George Washington. This left-profile depiction of the nation’s first president was created in 1932 by John Flanagan for use on the US quarter, where it remains to this day as the longest running US coin design.
