The Royal Mint’s Queen’s Beast Series of gold, silver, and platinum coins debuted with silver and gold bullion options only in 2016. The Lion of England was followed by the Griffin of Edward III, the Red Dragon of Wales, the Unicorn of Scotland, and the Black Bull of Clarence. In the proof series though, the Queen’s Beast coin followed a release schedule of the Lion of England, the Unicorn of Scotland, and the Red Dragon of Wales before the Black Bull.
On the reverse of the 2018 5 oz Proof Silver British Queen’s Beast Black Bull Coin is the depiction of the bull with the royal arms carried by British monarchs over a 200-year period. From the Lancastrian kings before King Edward IV from the House of York to Tudor rulers who came after, the Black Bull was often featured with a quartered shield.
In two of the quadrants on this shield are the golden lilies of France. These were added to Britain’s arms by Edward III to support his claim to the crown of France. The other two quadrants feature the three golden lions of England adopted by Richard I.
The obverse of the 2018 5 oz Proof Silver British Queen’s Beast Black Bull coin includes the right-profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is Britain’s longest-reigning monarch and this fifth-generation design depicts the Queen at age 89 as created in 2015 by Jody Clark.
Each of these Proof Silver British Queen’s Beast Coins arrives in an individual capsule housed within a black, commemorative display box from the Royal Mint. Included with purchase is a Certificate of Authenticity.
