Proof Gold American Eagle coins come in four various weight options for collectors. The 1 oz coin debuted in 1986 with the Gold Eagle bullion coins and the silver counterparts in the series. The fractional weights were phased in over 1987 and 1988, with the ½ oz coin introduced first, followed by the ¼ oz and 1/10 oz coins in the final expansion year.
Mintage for the coins has fluctuated over time and always been well below that of the bullion coins, a mark of typical proof coinage. The highest mintage was in 1988 when the 1/10 oz Proof Gold American Eagle debuted. The lowest mintage figure occurred in 2012 with just 20,740 coins sold, and the US Mint has placed a low mintage cap of 22,000 coins max for the 2018 1/10 oz Proof Gold American Eagle.
The obverse side of all Gold American Eagle Coins bears the image of Liberty created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This design features Liberty’s full-length figure in a flowing robe and hair blowing in the breeze. She is depicted walking forward from Washington DC with a torch and olive branch, the US Capitol Building visible at her feet in the background.
On the reverse of the 2018-W 1/10 oz Proof Gold American Eagle Coin you’ll notice a family of American bald eagles. In the design from Miley Busiek, a male eagle returns to the nest with his wings spread wide to cover the whole nest. A female eagle is depicted below watching out for the hatchlings.
All 2018 Proof Gold American Eagle Coins now ship in satin-lined, burgundy velvet presentation cases that are new for 2018. The US Mint houses the cases inside of burgundy boxes and includes a Certificate of Authenticity for each coin.
