After seven years of availability, the Royal Canadian Mint added the 1/2 oz gold coin into the Gold Maple Leaf series in 1986. This year saw the expansion of the series from three coins (1 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz) to four with the addition of this coin and gave the Gold Maple Leaf Series the same popular weights found in other major programs.
All Gold Canadian Maple Leaf Coins issued by the RCM since 2015 feature light-diffracting radial lines on both the obverse and reverse surfaces. These lines are designed to make it harder for counterfeiters to replicate realistic looking Gold Maple Leaf coins. The mint previously introduced a maple leaf privy laser engraved onto coins in 2013, but that security feature is available only on the 1 oz coin.
On the obverse of the 2019 1/2 oz Gold Canadian Maple Leaf Coin is the fourth-generation portrait of Queen Elizabeth II in right-profile relief. Created in 2002 by Susanna Blunt, the design debuted in 2003 and is featured on all bullion and circulation Canadian coinage.
The reverse side of 2019 Gold Canadian Maple Leaf coins features the sugar maple leaf. This is the original design created by Walter Ott in 1979 with only modernizations added to it over the years. Since the mid-18th century, residents of Canada have used the maple leaf as a symbol of the region.
