On February 5, 1869, John Deason noticed something in the dirt near the roots of a tree in the goldfields of Victoria, Australia, near the town of Moliagul. Deason picked at the item just 3 cm below the surface and couldn’t believe his eyes. It was a gold nugget. He would not dig it up until later that night when darkness covered his work.
What emerged from the ground on that day is the largest-known alluvial gold nugget ever discovered in the world. It weighed an estimated 72 kilograms and contained nearly 2,300 ounces of gold. The nugget was so large that when Deason took it to a bank for weighing and valuation, it had to be broken over an anvil just to get it down to a size that would fit the scales.
