Wedge Tail Eagles are one of the largest predatory birds in the world today. When fully grown, these aerial predators have an impressive wingspan of more than 8 feet from wingtip to wingtip. The eagle is named for its wedge-shaped tail feather region and is native to Australia, Tasmania, and the southern reaches of New Guinea.

2019 Silver Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Coins are the first in the series to feature new designs on both the obverse and reverse field in the same year. Mercanti’s design for this issue is unique to 2019 and is the fourth design overall. The original 2014 design was used in 2014 and 2015, while the second design released in 2016 was used again in 2017. The 2018 and 2019 designs are unique to each issue.

On the reverse of the 2019 1 oz Silver Australian Wedge Tail Eagle Coin is an all-new design of the powerful eagle in flight. The bird is depicted high in the air with its wings spread to their maximum as the bird prepares to swoop down and strike its prey. This design comes from former US Mint Chief Engraver John Mercanti.

The obverse of the 2019 Silver Australian Wedge Tail Eagle features a new design of Queen Elizabeth II on Australian coins for the first time since 1998. This design is from Jody Clark and is a different version of his design for the Royal Mint of England’s coinage. The right-profile portrait shows the Queen wearing the Royal Diadem crown and also features her neckline and shoulders. It is the first design to do that since the 1960s.
