Starting in 2018, the Royal Canadian Mint issued its Silver Canadian Maple Leaf coins with an exciting new technology known as MINTSHIELD. This invisible application goes onto the surface of the silver blanks prior to coining to help prevent issues with milk spots or white spots on silver bullion offerings. The application of this technology does not alter the metal purity or detract from the visual brilliance of the coins.
