Orca whales come from the oceanic dolphin family and occupy waters around the world. From the Arctic Ocean to the Antarctic waters, the orca is an apex predator that hunts fish, seals, and other water mammals. Given its size and ferocious power, no other animals in the ocean hunt the orca.
The obverse field of 2019 Silver Canadian Orca Whale Coins comes with a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. The longest-reigning monarch in English history, Elizabeth II has featured on Canadian coins since 1952. This is the fourth-generation portrait of the Queen to grace Canadian coins. Designed in 2003 by Susanna Blunt, this is the first portrait in her reign to lack a crown and is just the second designed by a Canadian artist.
On the reverse side of the 2019 2 oz Silver Orca Whale Coin is a depiction of the orca, better known as the killer whale. The species is instantly recognizable for its black-and-white skin and is shown here swimming along the coastline with mountains in the background. Both sides of the coin have the Royal Canadian Mint’s micro-engraved radial lines, while the reverse comes with the laser-engraved maple leaf privy. Inside of the privy mark is the “19” date mark that is visible only under magnification.
The Royal Canadian Mint was founded in 1908 to serve as the sovereign mint of the nation. It initially refined gold and silver discovered in the Yukon Territories, as well as national coinage. Today, the mint consists of the Ottawa Mint and Winnipeg Mint branches.
