The term Germania originated in the 1st century BC as a term to refer to the region where Germanic tribes lived. The Roman Empire referred to these tribes as savages, due in part to the brutal tactics of the tribes in warfare. In the more recent era of human history, Germania became associated with the German Empire as a personification of the nation and its people. As a female personification, Germania came into existence during the Romantic Era. Though the term existed in human civilization dating to at least the 1st century BC, it became commonly associated with the Revolutions of 1848 in Germany. The figure of Germania was later adopted by the German Empire that reigned from 1871 until the conclusion of World War I.

On the obverse side of 2020 Silver Germania Rounds is a depiction of Germania. This powerful image of the female personification is shown in left-profile relief with a wind-blown cape around her shoulders and a wreath crown atop her head. In this year’s design, she extends her left hand with a leather shield over her forearm for an eagle to land on. In a greater adoption of Germanic symbolism, a double-headed eagle comes to rest on her forearm.
Traditional depictions of Germania depict her figure with the crown wreath on her head and a sword in one hand. The Revolutions of 1848 resulted in the adoption of a Germania personification with these design elements, as well as the double-headed eagle shield on her chest.
The reverse field of 2020 1 oz Silver Germania Rounds comes with the Germania Mint emblem. In this design element, the double-headed eagle is featured with corkscrew arrows in its talons and fern leaves framing the design element.
