In 2018, the South African Mint decided to make the Silver Krugerrand a permanent fixture in its bullion series. The 2017 issue year had seen the mint issue the first-ever Krugerrand in silver, but that coin was a Premium Uncirculated option with a special striking process and done only for the 50th anniversary of the series that year. Starting with 2018, the mint issued the Silver Krugerrand as a new fixture in the bullion market.
All of the 2020 1 oz Silver South African Krugerrands available to you in this product listing come with individual protective plastic flips or various bulk shipping options. For multiples of 25, you will receive your coins inside of tubes of 25 coins. For multiples of 500, the coins ship inside of a Monster Box that includes 20 individual tubes of 25 coins.
On the obverse of each 2020 Silver South African Krugerrand is the image of Paul Kruger. Affectionately known as Oom Paul in Afrikaans, that nickname translates to Uncle Paul in English. Kruger was a leader of the Boer cause during the Boer Wars and served as one of three leaders in the triumvirate governing South Africa before the establishment of the republic and his election as its first president in 1883.
The reverse face of 2020 1 oz Silver South African Krugerrands bears the design of a Springbok antelope. The national symbol of the modern Republic of South Africa, the springbok was first described by zoologist Eberhard August Wilhelm von Zimmermann in 1780 and has three identified subspecies.
