Weir Farm National Historic Site honors the life and work of the American impressionist painter J. Alden Weir. Mr. Weir settled on the land in 1882 after purchasing a 153-acre farm for just $10 and a painting. Weir would later host several different artists on the property over the years and would produce a large number of paintings depicted the landscapes around Ridgefield, Connecticut.

This portrait was created in 1932 by John Flanagan for use on the circulation quarter. His image was chosen for the quarter in 1932 to honor the 200th anniversary of his birth. Flanagan created this left-profile portrait based on a bust of Washington sculpted in 1786.
