2020 started out as a slow year in terms of demand for the Silver American Eagle. Strong sales in January led to extreme lows in February with the Silver Eagle failing to sell even 1 million coins. However, demand would change drastically in March and the coin shot to such high levels of demand that the West Point Mint sold out of its entire allotment of available Silver Eagles on-hand.
As a result, the West Point Mint had to restart active coining to meet surging demand for the eagles. A temporary shutdown at the West Point Mint then led to the need for added coining capacity and the Philadelphia Mint was pressed into service. Though there are no mint marks on these coins, each one of the 2020-P 1 oz Silver American Eagles available to you in this listing was produced by the Philadelphia Mint to help meet the increased demand for the coins.
The obverse side of 2020-P 1 oz Silver American Eagles bears the famous Walking Liberty image from Adolph A. Weinman. Created in 1916, the design originally featured on the obverse side of the Walking Liberty Half Dollar from 1916 to 1947.
On the reverse face of the 2020-P 1 oz Silver American Eagle is a depiction of the modern heraldic eagle of the United States. The image features the bald eagle with the national shield on its chest, arrows of war in one talon, and an olive branch in the other.
These 2020-P 1 oz Silver American Eagles are near-perfect specimens with a Mint State 69 certification. Coins in this condition showcase full, original mint luster and a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. Examples of acceptable flaws include only minuscule contact marks or hairlines and must be located outside the primary focal points. As a First Day of Issue coin, these items were received by the NGC within 24 hours of issue by the US Mint. The included label in the slab identifies the coins as Philadelphia Mint specimens and includes a notation that the coins were an “Emergency Production” of the mint to meet the massive demand for the coins.
