As a global pandemic wreaked havoc on global stock markets in March 2020, the demand for gold and silver surged to such an extent that shortages of the coveted precious metals began to hit mints and authorized dealers. The West Point Mint ran out of 2020 Silver Eagles within a week of the pandemic hitting. Making matters worse, the West Point Mint had to reduce staffing to keep workers safe during production and then went through a seven-day shutdown in April 2020. The Philadelphia Mint stepped with additional coining capacity in April to produce 240,000 2020 Silver Eagles for investors.
All of these 2020-P 1 oz Silver American Eagles are near-perfect coins according to the PCGS. The Mint State 69 certification applies to coins with full, original mint luster and a maximum of two detracting flaws. Acceptable flaws at this level include only minuscule contact marks or hairlines that must be outside the primary focal points of the coin.
Included in the slab for these coins are numerous additional labels. First and foremost, the coins are First Day of Issue specimens received by the PCGS or an approved third-party depository within the first 24 hours of issue by the US Mint. Labeling inside of the slab also indicates the coins were “Struck at Philadelphia” as “Silver Eagle – Emergency Issue” coins.
Walking Liberty is featured on the obverse of all 2020 Silver American Eagles in this listing. Liberty is shown in left-profile relief on this side walking toward the sun on the horizon in the distance as it crests a mountain peak.
The heraldic eagle of the United States is found on the reverse of the 2020-P 1 oz Silver American Eagles. Designed in 1986 by John Mercanti for these coins, the design showcases the bald eagle with the US national shield on its chest, the arrows of war in one talon, and the olive branch of peace in the other.
