Platypus coin designs have been available from Perth Mint for several years. There is an existing platinum coin series that features the same image of the platypus on the reverse of the coins each year. The 2021 release schedule features this 1/4 oz gold coin alongside a larger 1.5 Troy ounce silver bullion coin, with both options featuring the same design from Jennifer McKenna.

All of these 2021 1/4 oz Gold Australian Platypus Coins are available with either individual packaging or bulk packaging. All coins are individually housed in capsules, with multiples of 20 sealed together in a roll of plastic. Each coin is in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. The unlimited mintage of these coins means only that Perth Mint struck them to meet demand through the end of 2021.

On the obverse of 2021 Gold Australian Platypus Coins is a depiction of Queen Elizabeth II. England’s longest-reigning monarch, Elizabeth II is featured here at the age of 89 wearing the George IV State Diadem Crown. This effigy was created for the Royal Mint in 2015 by Jody Clark and first used on Australian coins starting in 2018. It is the sixth-generation design for Australian coins and the first since 1966 to include her shoulders within the portrait element.

The reverse side of the 2021 1/4 oz Gold Platypus shows the image of the semiaquatic mammal underneath the surface of the water. In this design from Jennifer McKenna, the platypus is shown swimming under a lilypad that rests on the surface, with its stem reaching deep down into the water behind the platypus.
