The Royal Canadian Mint released the first coins in this series in 1979. From 1979 to November 1982, only a 1 oz gold coin was available. The first expansion consisted of 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins, with gold purity increased from .999 to .9999 fine gold. Subsequent releases in the series include the introduction of a 1/2 oz gold coin in 1986, a 1/20 oz gold coin in 1993, and a 1 Gram gold coin in 2014.
In 2014, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced security features to its coins. These included engraved radial lines in the background field on both faces of the coin, and a micro laser-engraved privy mark. The privy mark is the shape of a maple leaf and contains the final two digits of the date mark, visible only under magnification.
