The Royal Canadian Mint released the first coins in this series in 1979. From 1979 to November 1982, only a 1 oz gold coin was available. The first expansion consisted of 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins, with gold purity increased from .999 to .9999 fine gold. Subsequent releases in the series include the introduction of a 1/2 oz gold coin in 1986, a 1/20 oz gold coin in 1993, and a 1 Gram gold coin in 2014.

In 2014, the Royal Canadian Mint introduced security features to its coins. These included engraved radial lines in the background field on both faces of the coin, and a micro laser-engraved privy mark. The privy mark is the shape of a maple leaf and contains the final two digits of the date mark, visible only under magnification.

Queen Elizabeth II is found on the obverse of 2021 1 oz Gold Canadian Maple Leafs. This right-profile portrait was created in 2003 by Susanna Blunt. It is the fourth-generation effigy of Her Majesty on Canadian coins and the first of her reign to lack a crown.

A sugar maple leaf is featured in the reverse design of 2021 Gold Canadian Maple Leafs. Created in 1979 by Walter Ott, this version of the national emblem has been used on all versions of the Canadian Maple Leaf bullion series.
