A certified coin is one that is received by the PCGS or NGC for grading. In any case, the coins are assessed for the condition of the design strikes and the visual brilliance of the background fields. Additional labels can be issued based on the timing of the coin’s arrival for grading and/or the enhanced visual appeal of proof coins.

The PCGS, like the NGC, issues coins a grade between 1 and 70 on the Sheldon numeric scale, a numbering system developed in the 1940s to assist in grading historic coins. The highest possible grade is Mint State 70, a grade that indicates a coin that is in perfect condition. The next highest grade, and one of the most common, is the Mint State 69 grade. Coins in this condition are considered near-perfect specimens.

The obverse side of 2021 1 oz Platinum American Eagles comes with an image of the Statue of Liberty. This vision of Liberty is the only one in the American Eagle Series that is a modern design not originating from historic US coinage. The design comes with a focus on the Statue of Liberty’s face as she wears her towering, spiked crown.

On the reverse field of the 2021 1 oz Platinum Eagle is a depiction of the American bald eagle in flight. The bald eagle is shown here soaring over the nation as the sun rises on the horizon. The eagle has its wings flexed straight to its sides as it glides through the air.

These 2021 1 oz Platinum American Eagles are perfect specimens with a Mint State 70 grade. The PCGS assigns an MS70 grade to coins that showcase full, original mint luster and bear no detracting flaws. First Strike coins are those received by the PCGS within 30 days for grading.
