Like other releases from the Scottsdale Mint, the Gibraltar coin series features epic scenes from history and mythology. The imagery on the 2021-coin design tells the story of Perseus, a Greek hero and monster slayer. He beheaded Medusa to save Andromeda from a vicious sea monster. Perseus is also the son of Zeus, and he’s technically the half-brother and great-grandfather of Hercules, since they were both sired by Zeus.

On the obverse of the 2021 1 oz Silver Medusa’s Head Coin BU is the Gibraltar Coat of Arms. There are three nations from the United Kingdom represented on the obverse: England, Scotland, and Ireland. Each has its own special imagery in the Coat of Arms. The weight, value, and purity of the coin are also listed on the obverse, as well as the release year and inscription “GIBRALTAR”.

The reverse of the 2021 1 oz Silver Gibraltar Medusa’s Head Coin BU shows the image of Perseus holding up the severed head of Medusa. The portrait of Benvenuto Cellini, the original sculptor, is seen behind Perseus. This sculpture is considered to be one of Cellini’s best pieces of artwork, and it can be seen in real life at the Piazza della Signoria in Italy.
