The STS Sedov is a Russian-owned ship that was built in 1921. The ship was originally built in Kiel, Germany, for the F.A. Vinnen & Co. German shippers based in Bremen. The company was one of Germany’s largest shippers at the time and insisted on the Sedov, then known as the Magdalene Vinnen II, being constructed with an auxiliary engine to supplement the sail power generated by its four massive masts. The inclusion of an auxiliary engine made the Sedov the first sailing ship in the world with auxiliary power.

On the obverse of 2021 Silver Rwandan Sedov Nautical Ounce Coins is a depiction of the STS Sedov. The massive four-masted vessel is a steel barque, a term used to describe sailing vessels with three or more main masts. The Magdalene Vinnen II became known as the STS Sedov after World War II when the ship was given to the Soviet Union as part of German war reparations. The ship was renamed the STS Sedov and serves as a training vessel for young sailors today.

The reverse side of 2021 1 oz Silver Sedov Nautical Ounce Coins comes with an image of the coat of arms for Rwanda. The national seal of Rwanda comes with a traditional woven basket at the center that is flanked by branches of coffee and sorghum, with inscriptions of issuing authority, issuing nation, and the face value.
