  • On the reverse side is a depiction of the sugar maple leaf.

The Silver Canadian Maple Leaf Coin was introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1988. The series has the same designs on the obverse and reverse each year. An effigy of Queen Elizabeth II is found on the obverse, while the sugar maple leaf is on the reverse. While the sugar maple leaf has remained the same each year, the specific effigy of the Queen on the obverse has changed a few times.

When the program debuted in 1988, the second-generation effigy of the Queen was used on the coins. This design from Arnold Machin had been in use since 1965 and was replaced in 1990 by the first image from a Canadian artist. The Dora de Pedery-Hunt effigy was on the coins from 1990 to 2002, and eventually replaced in 2003 by Susanna Blunt’s fourth-generation depiction of the Queen.

The obverse of the 2021 1 oz Silver Canadian Maple Leafs includes the latest effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. In use on the coins since 2003, this bust of Her Majesty is the fourth for Canadian coins and the first during her reign to lack a crown on the Queen’s head.

On the reverse of 2021 Silver Canadian Maple Leafs, you will find the sugar maple leaf. This design is based on Walter Ott’s 1979 depiction of the sugar maple leaf. This side of the coin also features a laser micro-engraved privy mark. This mark has the “21” date mark in the center that is visible only under magnification. Both sides of the coin have radial lines in the background field.
