The Gold American Eagle Series debuted in 1986. That year features a BU coin in weights of 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz gold. It also included a 1 oz proof coin. In 1987 and 1988, fractional-ounce proof gold coins were introduced. In 2006, for the 20th anniversary, the US Mint introduced the burnished coins, which are now available only in 1 oz gold.

In 2021, the United States Mint marked the 35th anniversary of the series with the introduction of a new reverse design element. However, the mint first issued 2021-dated Gold Eagles with the original reverse design from Miley Busiek before later switching to the new image from Jennie Norris. As of the 2022 release, the original design is officially retired and the new image is all you will find on the reverse of the coins.

The obverse of 2022 Gold American Eagles continues to feature the effigy of Lady Liberty. This design was created in 1907 by Augustus Saint-Gauden and first featured on the Gold $20 Double Eagle.

On the reverse side of the 2022 1/2 oz Gold Eagle, you will find the new bald eagle depiction from Jennie Norris. It is a left-profile relief that focuses on the head of the bird with great detail in its physical features and the plumage of the bird.

These 2022 1/2 oz Gold American Eagles are available to purchase in near-perfect condition with protective slabs. The coins are Mint State 69 specimens that showcase full, original mint luster with no more than two minor detracting flaws present. These flaws are limited in nature to minuscule contact marks or hairlines and limited in scope to the areas outside of the primary fields of the coin.
