In 1986, the Perth Mint introduced a gold bullion series known as the Gold Nugget. At the time, the coins featured different images of gold nuggets on each weight in the series, but used those same images on the same weights each year. In 1990, the program changed to become the Gold Kangaroo and was introduced alongside the debut of the Silver Kookaburra.
With the change to the Gold Kangaroo, Perth Mint adopted a new design approach for the coins in the series. The same weights were used in the collection, but rather than offering different images on each weight in the series, the mint introduced a new reverse design each year that was used across all weights and versions of the coin.
Queen Elizabeth II is on the obverse side of 2022 1/4 oz Proof Gold Kangaroos. This effigy of the Queen was created in 2015 by Jody Clark and first debuted on British coins as the fifth-generation portrait of Her Majesty. This design first appeared on Australian coins in 2018 as the sixth-generation Australian coin design of the Queen. It depicts the Queen in right-profile relief with the George IV State Diadem Crown on her head.
Bounding kangaroos are featured on the reverse of 2022 Proof Gold Australian Kangaroos. This design in 2022 comes from Neil Hollis and shows two kangaroos bounding along the Outback. One is featured in the foreground as the other is in the background field.
