Marie Curie is a singular figure in the history of science, being the only female scientist and one of only two historical figures to garner Nobel Prizes in two different scientific disciplines, physics and chemistry. Along with her husband Pierre and the physicist Henri Becquerel, she shared one of those prizes for the discovery of radioactivity, a term she coined. Her prize in the field of chemistry came from the discovery of the elements polonium and radium. These epoch-making discoveries helped shape a great deal of the scientific knowledge that the coming decades would take for granted.

This pioneering figure in science is featured in a colorized portrait on the coin’s reverse side with part of one of her Nobel Prize diplomas forming the backdrop. Inscriptions of her name, signature, and verification of the weight and purity of the coin’s silver round out the tribute.

The classic Ian Rank-Broadley-designed effigy of Queen Elizabeth II appears on the coin’s obverse side, confirming it as legal tender of Niue. It’s accompanied by the inscriptions “Queen Elizabeth II,” “Niue,” “Two Dollars,” and “2022.”
