The Molon Labe Series chronicles the Battle of Thermopylae in Ancient Greece. As the Persian Army once again invaded Greece, it was up to King Leonidas, the ruler of the city-state of Sparta, to lead the first Greek force to meet the Persians and try to slow the advance. While buying time for the rest of Greece to call up an army, Leonidas brought 300 of his elite Spartan warriors and 7,000 Greeks to meet a 150,000-man force of Persians under the direction of Xerxes.
The obverse of the new 2022 1 oz Silver Molon Labe Type 1 Coin is an effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty is shown here in right-profile relief wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland Tiara. Designed in 1998 by Ian Rank-Broadley, this image debuted on British coins in 1998 and has since proliferated across the coinage of various Commonwealth Nations.
On the reverse side of 2022 Silver Niue Molon Labe Type 1 Coins, you will find the depiction of a Spartan warrior. The Spartans and their supporting Greek force met the Persians at a geographical location known as the Hot Gates. Here, King Leonidas hoped to channel the larger Persian force into narrow alleys to fight his elite soldiers. The Spartans held out for three days before being betrayed. Leonidas released the other Greeks and stayed behind with his 300 men to defend the pass to the last man, attempting to buy time for the rest of Greece to prepare an army to stop the Persians.
