The House of Tudor was formed by Henry Tudor a man who claimed lineage to the House of Lancaster through his mother. Henry Tudor defeated the last Yorkist monarch, King Richard III, at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485. He moved quickly to fulfill his promise to unite rival cadet houses of the Plantagenets, Lancaster and York, by marrying Elizabeth of York, the daughter of King Edward IV.
From 1485 to 1603, a total of five monarchs would rule England from the House of Tudor. King Henry VII was the founder and first monarch. His eldest surviving son, Henry VIII, would reign from 1509 to 1547, with three of Henry VIII’s children succeeding him. After brief reigns by his son King Edward VI and eldest child, Queen Mary I, it would be his daughter with Anne Boleyn who reigned the longest and ushered in a golden era for England. Queen Elizabeth I reigned from 1558 to 1603.
