In 1999, the African Wildlife Series was introduced by the Bavarian State Mint. The original coins in the series were issued as the Silver Zambia Elephants and were available largely as 1 oz silver coins. Over the course of time, the series not only shifted to being the Silver Somalia Elephant, but also gained more weights and options.
Following the 2004 swap to the Silver Somalia Elephant Series, the Bavarian State Mint began to expand the options in the series. The collection expanded its BU Silver coin options in 2017 with the introduction of 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, 2 oz, 5 oz, and 10 oz silver coins. These joined the existing 1 oz and 1 Kilo silver coins, with proof coins also available each year.

This year’s exclusive design shows an adult bush elephant marching along the savanna with its young calf at its side.
