Proof Gold Eagles were introduced to numismatists in 1986. The Proof Gold Eagle Series started in 1986 with only the 1 oz gold coin available. In 1987, the 1/2 oz gold coin was introduced in the series. In 1988, the series was completed with the addition of the 1/4 oz and 1/10 oz gold coins.
All Gold Eagles from the United States Mint come with 22-karat gold content. Modern American gold coins with 22-karat gold content have 91.67% gold by weight with a balance of 5.33% copper and 3% silver. When the Gold Eagle was introduced by the US Mint in 1986, it was the first gold coin issued since 1933 and the purest offered since 1834.
The obverse of 2022-W Proof Gold American Eagles comes with a portrait of Lady Liberty in front-facing relief. This full-length vision of Liberty was created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. It shows Liberty as she strides forward with a torch held up in her right hand and an olive branch clutched in her left. There are sun rays in the background, a ring of stars around the field, and the U.S. Capitol Building.
On the reverse side of the 2022-W 1/4 oz Proof Gold Eagle is an image of the American bald eagle. Designed by Jennie Norris to replace the original reverse design, this visual shows the head of the bald eagle in left-profile relief
These 2022-W 1/4 oz Proof Gold American Eagles are available in acrylic capsules. The coins are presented inside a display box by the US Mint with an outer shipper and Certificate of Authenticity included. Proof coins come with frosted designs overlaying mirrored fields.
