The Battle of Iwo Jima took place on the island of the same name over the course of 35 days between February 19, 1945, and March 26, 1945. The battle was considered vital to the US effort to island-hop through the Pacific Ocean toward the home islands of Imperial Japan. To capture the island, the United States mobilized one of its largest forces ever to invade and capture the island.

Departing from Hawaii, the United States Marine Corps and United States Navy steamed toward the island with 110,000 US Marines and some 880 ships. Participating on the US side was the 5^th Amphibious Corps with three US Marine divisions and the 147^th Infantry Regiment, the 7^th Air Force, and the US 5^th Fleet. Though the 35-day battle delivered a number of iconic photos and moments, none is more memorable than the sight of six US Marines raising the American flag at the highest point of the island.
