The first commemorative coin the United States Mint ever issued was a Gold $10 Liberty Head Eagle. This coin had a commemorative CAL engraving on it that noted the influx of gold to the US Treasury from the California Gold Rush. In the 1890s, annual commemorative production ramped up.
By the 1950s, however, the American public had grown bored with US Mint Commemorative Coins. The general consensus was that the US Mint was issuing too many designs with too much volume for the coins to feel rare, special, and/or unique. President Dwight D. Eisenhower ended commemorative coinage in the US. It wasn’t until 1982 that the US Mint resumed commemorative coining.
The obverse and reverse designs of these Silver Half Dollar US Mint Commemorative Coins include varying designs. The US Mint has honored many important dates, historic moments, political figures, and influential Americans on its commemorative coinage over the years.
