Prior to 1933, it was not only legal for private American citizens to own gold, but in fact, it was commonplace as one of the primary forms of circulation coinage featuring 90% gold content. The denominations of the US Eagle were in production at the United States Mint from 1795 to 1933 and included the Gold $5 Half Eagle. The $5 Liberty Half Eagle denomination and design within the Gold US Eagle Series is one of the most unique for several important reasons. First and foremost, this is the only singular design and denomination minted at seven different US Mint branch facilities: Philadelphia, Dahlonega, Charlotte, New Orleans, San Francisco, Carson City, and Denver. Additionally, there is a unique visual aspect of the coins issued by Charlotte and Dahlonega in the history of this denomination. Because of the higher natural silver content within the gold ore used by these branches, Gold $5 Liberty Half Eagles struck at either site tend to have a green-gold coloration.
All of these Pre-33 Gold $5 Liberty Half Eagle Four-Coin Sets come with four coins boasting random date marks. The Liberty Head Series ran from 1839 to 1907. Each coin comes in its own protective flip and boasts Extremely Fine or better conditions. This equates to roughly the 40-45 range on the Sheldon Numeric Scale. These coins likely have only light wear on the highest relief points, with the potential for traces of the original mint luster to remain.
On the obverse of Pre-33 Gold Liberty Half Eagles is a left-profile bust of Lady Liberty. Designed by Christian Gobrecht, it features Liberty with her hair in a bun, strands of curls down her neck, and a coronet crown. There are 13 stars on this side in a circle around Liberty.
The reverse side of Pre-33 Gold $5 Liberty Half Eagles comes with a depiction of the heraldic eagle of the United States. The design features the nation of issue and face value, as Five D., with the US national shield, arrows of war, and the olive branch of peace. Coins dated 1866 to 1907 in this series include a banner with In God We Trust engraved on it.
