The 2008 issue year was the only one in which the United States Mint issued fractional-weight Gold American Buffalo coins. The US Mint expanded the Gold Buffalo series to include an uncirculated coin with fractional weights and fractional weights in the Proof Gold Buffalo range. After this year, the US Mint would suspend both the fractional weights and the uncirculated coin for good.
On the obverse of the 2008-W Proof Gold American Buffalo Coin is the depiction of an American Indian. This tribal leader was created from the combination of facial features of Big Tree, Iron Tail, and Two Moons. James Earle Fraser created the design initially in 1913 for the nation’s five-cent circulation coin.
The reverse of the coins in the 2008-W Proof Gold American Buffalo Set includes the image of Black Diamond. An American bison, he was kept in captivity at the Central Park Zoo in New York City around the turn of the 20th century. Fraser used him as inspiration for the design on this coin.
All of the coins in this 2008-W Four-Coin Proof Gold American Buffalo Set feature a “W” mint mark on the obverse side. This denotes the coins were struck by the West Point Mint and also include an “F” in honor of Fraser.
